The gob-smackingly brazen acts of a group of robbers left Cornubia Mall shoppers in utter shock on Tuesday morning.
What happened at Cornubia Mall?
The Durban shopping mall was abuzz with usual traffic, but things soon turned for the worst when a group of armed men entered a clothing store with weapons drawn.
General manager Lara Gracie confirmed to IOL News that the store robbery took place at approximately 11:00.
The robbers hauled a large sack into the store and wiped it clean, taking clothes and cellphones. It’s unclear, at this stage, if any cash was removed from registers.
“There were no injuries reported. Shopper safety remains a priority for the management of Cornubia Mall and we are awaiting a completed incident report,” Gracie said.
Private security and police were notified but, by the time respondents arrived, the robbers had fled in a getaway vehicle.
Watch: Robbers drag stolen goods out of Durban mall
It must have taken a while for police to get to the scene, since the robbers were caught on camera, struggling to gather momentum in pushing the sack of stolen goods to their vehicle.
In the video clip, more than 10 unidentified men are seen battling with the weight of the sack that was so full, stolen clothes kept falling out.
At this time, it’s believed the suspects are still at large.
Cornubia Mall has cautiously reopened on Wednesday.
Here is video footage showing the suspects struggling with the stolen items:
