Watch: Cape Town Metro Police attacked by armed robbers
What started out as a routine traffic stop on the corners of Rochester and Stock Road, Philippi, ended in bloodshed.
Surveillance footage taken from a nearby business showed how two armed robbers snuck up on a team of Metro police officers, who were in the process of recording a traffic violation, and brazenly shot one of them at point-blank range.
According to Daily Maverick journalist Velani Ludidi, one of the suspects opened fire and struck one of the officers before fleeing with his gun.
Fortunately, the Cape Town Metro Police officer suffered non-life-threatening wounds and was rushed to the hospital for treatment. The condition of the injured officer was unknown at the time this article was published.
The incident took place in a busy informal trade district and while the suspects were caught on camera, the grainy footage may not be all that useful to investigators.
In an effort to expedite the search for the two assailants, the Cape Town Metro Police Department has issued a R5 000 reward for anyone with information on the identities of the gunmen.
Here’s the video footage of the brazen daylight robbery:
