An area near Panya Pan Street in Bekkersdal, Westonaria, has been cordoned off by police officers following a cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery that claimed the life of a security officer.
Bekkersdal CIT heist: Here’s what we know
As reported by crime reporter Yusuf Abramjee, the CIT heist took place on Tuesday morning, in the township situated 14km south of Randfontein, Gauteng.
Details surrounding the violent encounter are still very much sketchy but we understand that an unknown number of suspects bombed the Fidelity money truck and made off with an undisclosed amount of money in a white BMW and a Ford Ranger.
Randwest traffic officers hit with stray bullets
At this time, we can’t confirm how many armed security guards were onboard the CIT truck but we understand that one of them was shot and killed.
Moreover, a Bekkersdal traffic vehicle occupied by two officers, a male and female, was randomly attacked by the fleeing robbers.
We understand that the Randwest traffic officers have been rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
Bekkersdal community grabs leftover cash
At the crime scene, the Bekkersdal community came out in numbers to witness the brazen acts of the robbers who — at the time of publishing this article — were still at large.
Residents could be seen crowding the scene of the truck bombing, grabbing the shredded cash notes that were left strewn all over the dirt road.
We understand that no civilian was arrested for this.
Bekkersdal police have yet to issue a statement on the incident. This is a developing story.
