In the ongoing bail hearing of Bafana Mahungela, a startling revelation came to light that Kirsten Kluyts was pregnant on the day she was murdered.
Kirsten Kluyts was pregnant when she was killed, court hears
The details of the case are harrowing. Kluyts, a teacher at Delta Park High School, was attacked while participating in the MyRun event in Sandton on 29 October 2023.
Her body was later found at George Lea Park in Parkmore, hours after her disappearance. The victim’s running shoes, sunglasses, blue T-shirt, pants, and pink cap were reportedly taken.
Mahungela was arrested on 26 November 2023 at the Varsity College student residence in Benmore, following the acquisition of video footage from CCTV cameras in the Parkmore area.
The footage, which has become a critical piece of evidence in the case, purportedly shows Mahungela leaving the area where Kluyts’ body was found, wearing her blue T-shirt.
The footage also allegedly captured him jumping over a locked gate at the Sandton Sports Club and attempting to dispose of Kluyts’ clothes.
Mahungela has vehemently denied the charges of stalking, raping, or killing Kluyts. In his statement, he expressed disbelief at the idea of suddenly deciding to murder someone, particularly after attending a party the previous day and heading home to submit an assignment.
He admitted to wearing Kluyts’ shirt, which he claimed to have taken off her body to avoid implicating himself after contaminating the crime scene.
Mahungela stated he took the clothes and ran, fearing that his fingerprints on the body would lead to accusations against him.
The defence is challenging the evidence presented by the state, including the CCTV footage and the narrative of events leading to Kluyts’ death.
The state’s case, relying heavily on the footage and Mahungela’s actions after the incident, paints a different picture.
The court has yet to decide on Mahungela’s bail application, as the revelations and arguments continue to unfold.
