Cape Town water outage scheduled for Thursday, 14 March 2024: These areas will be affected
Residents in various parts of Cape Town should brace themselves for a water outage due to urgent maintenance work at the Voëlvlei Water Treatment Plant.
This necessary shutdown will directly affect the water supply to several areas, including Durbanville, Fisantekraal, and Klipheuwel, along with Hermon, Wellington, and private consumers along the Voëlvlei pipeline.
The outage is scheduled to take place from 08:00 to 20:00 on Thursday, 14 March 2024.
In a statement, the City of Cape Town urged residents in the impacted areas to prepare for this temporary inconvenience by storing adequate amounts of water in clean, sealed containers for domestic use.
“Reduce your consumption to maintain the water supply to you area during this period,” the City advised.
Cape Town dam levels hit worrying 70% mark
Cape Town’s water supply situation has become a cause for concern, with dam levels dipping to 70.4% as of Monday, 11 March 2024.
This recent data points to a weekly decline of 1.30% in dam levels, despite early winter rains performing better than expected.
The city has now shifted its water resource status to “Wise Water Use,” urging residents to be mindful of their water consumption.
The city, which relies heavily on major dams for its water supply, also supplemented by groundwater, springs, and minor dams, consumes around 914 million litres of water daily, on average.
However, fluctuations in dam levels have been observed across several major reservoirs.
The Berg River Dam, a crucial water source, saw a slight decrease in its water level, as did the Steenbras Lower Dam.
More notably, the Steenbras Upper Dam and Theewaterskloof, the largest dam, also experienced decreases in their water levels. Voëlvlei and Wemmershoek dams recorded 64.4% and 77.2%, respectively.
