Wake Dreyer, a teenager from Mitchells Plain, Cape Town, died in a hail of bullets, hours before the 2022 matric results, which he, much like millions of Grade 12 pupils in South Africa, was anxiously anticipating.
Wakeel Dreyer murder: Mitchells Plain teen shredded by bullets
Tributes have been pouring in on social media after news of Dreyer’s death went viral.
As reported by News24, the Mitchells Plain teen was targeted in a gang-related ambush on Thursday afternoon.
According to Cape Town police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi, Dreyer, a Beacon Hill High School pupil, was standing at a tuck shop when a group of unidentified gunmen pulled up and released a hail of gunfire, striking the teen at least 17 times.
“[Dreyer] sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his body. The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel. The unknown suspects fled the scene and are yet to be arrested. The motive for the attack is yet to be determined,” Swartbooi revealed.
Details around the vicious murder of Wakeel Dreyer remain sketchy and police, at this juncture, are still piecing together evidence to get a better understanding of the events that may have led to the teen’s death.
Murmurs on social media, however, seem to point to gang activity as the primary motive, albeit no information has yet surfaced linking Dreyer to the underworld.
In fact, according to his romantic partner, Dora Jansen, the teen was “a people person, and everyone around him was always left smiling and laughing.”
In a gut-wrenching turnout, the 2022 matric results that were released on Thursday showed that Dreyer had achieved a Bachelor’s pass.
“Now you not here to celebrate it with me and your family , I’m so proud of you and miss you so much [Wakeel Dreyer],” Jansen wrote on Facebook.
At the time this article was published, Wakeel Dreyer’s killers were still at large.
