The University of Cape Town (UCT) has once again solidified its position as the top university in Africa, according to the latest rankings by the Centre for World University Rankings (CWUR).
UCT retains its ranking as the best university in Africa
UCT climbed three places from last year, now securing the 267th spot worldwide in the prestigious 2023 Global 2000 list, which was released on Monday, 15 May 2023.
CWUR’s comprehensive assessment of 20 531 institutions worldwide resulted in only the top 2 000 receiving a ranking, placing UCT within the top 1.4% of universities globally for the third year in a row.
Professor Sue Harrison, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research and Internationalisation, expressed UCT’s pride in this significant recognition. She stated:
“As a leading research-intensive institution, we will continue to strive for outstanding and impactful research, ensuring that we remain at the forefront of cutting-edge discoveries and their influence.”
The ranking indicators shed light on UCT’s strong performance across various categories.
While UCT’s quality of education indicator slightly dropped to the 182nd position, it remains highly regarded. Notably, the alumni employment indicator displayed an impressive rise, moving up 13 places to reach 224th, and the research performance indicator improved by five places to secure the 245th position.
Here are the top 10 best universities in the world in 2023
At the global level, the Centre for World University Rankings highlighted the top 10 universities for 2023, led by Harvard University, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University.
Ivy League institutions, such as the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford, secured prominent spots among the world’s most renowned academic institutions.

The CWUR rankings adopt a meticulous methodology, relying on objective data rather than surveys or university submissions. They assess universities based on four key factors: education (25%), employability (25%), faculty (10%), and research (40%). This year, the rankings were based on an analysis of an impressive 62 million outcome-based data points.
Among the represented countries, the United States claimed the highest number of top-ranked universities, with 332 institutions in the top 2 000.
China made significant progress, with 314 universities featured, including all C9 League institutions. The University of Tokyo led the way for Japan, securing the 13th position globally.
In the global academic landscape, the University of Cambridge continued to shine as the top public university for the 10th consecutive year.
