The blaze, reported early this morning, continues to burn through the hillside vegetation. The City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services, along with 20 firefighting resources, including 4 x 4 vehicles and two helicopters, are battling the fire.
Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for the City’s Fire and Rescue Services, stated that the fire was reported at 07:35. Despite the challenging terrain and thick vegetation, efforts to control the fire are ongoing.
Senior officers from District North are overseeing the operations. Thankfully, no properties are currently in danger.
Residents of the affected areas have been evacuated as a precautionary measure.
Social media updates from JP Smith, the City’s Safety and Security Mayco Member, have kept the community informed about the firefighting efforts.
He mentioned that the inaccessible location of the fire initially hindered the response.
As of now, some firefighters have received treatment for heat exhaustion, but there have been no reports of injuries.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, with investigations underway.
This incident follows a recent trend of vegetation fires in the region, challenging the capabilities of emergency services.
The community is advised to stay alert and follow the guidance of local authorities during this ongoing situation.
