Recently, a 41-year-old man’s hike up the Tweede Waterval trail in Jonkershoek Nature Reserve, Stellenbosch, ended in tragedy.
Hiker falls to his death at Tweede Waterval
A team of Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR) medics was dispatched to the nature reserve near Stellenbosch late on Friday afternoon after the victim, along with his hiking partner, fell while descending the path back to their vehicle.
According to a statement released by WSAR, the hiker tragically slipped and fell approximately 40 meters. Passersby who witnessed the incident hurried to find a signal to call for help.
“Wilderness Search And Rescue teams from Cape Town and Stellenbosch, accompanied by Western Cape Department of Health & Wellness EMS medics, CapeNature Rangers and Stellenbosch Fire & rescue personnel, were driven into the reserve and quickly hiked up to locate the fallen hiker,” the statement read.
Despite the rapid and dedicated efforts of the rescue teams, who abseiled down the cliff to reach the hiker, it was soon discovered that the individual had succumbed to his injuries.
The operation concluded with the careful retrieval of the hiker’s body, which was then carried down the 5km path and handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS).
The entire rescue operation concluded shortly before 02:30 on Saturday morning.
From what we understand, an inquest docket has been opened to rule out foul play.

Preparation tips include using the trail directions provided at the reserve entrance, being mindful of the trail’s difficulty, and considering weather conditions.
Hikers should bring sufficient water, wear appropriate footwear to prevent slips and stay on marked paths to avoid accidents.
It is also crucial to hike in groups and inform someone of your expected return time.
