The R44 Clarence Drive, a key traffic route in the Western Cape, is scheduled to reopen on Tuesday, 11 December 2023. This comes after a long closure due to extensive damage from heavy downpours and landslides that occurred in September 2023.
When is R44 Clarence Drive reopening?
To facilitate afternoon traffic from 16:00, the road will open with traffic accommodations in place. Motorists should be aware of six stop/go controls and potential short-notice full closures as necessary for ongoing work.
The scenic route leading to Kleinmond faced significant landslips and rockslides, necessitating extensive repair work. Provincial Infrastructure Minister Tertuis Simmers emphasised, at the time, that clearing efforts continue in stable areas, with the main priority being to allow one lane of traffic until full two-way traffic can be restored.
The repairs to this critical route are projected to cost around R70 million.
Since the damage, travel has been restricted, with motorists from Gordon’s Bay only able to reach as far as Kogel Bay. Travel between Kogel Bay and Rooi Els remains impossible, indicating the extent of the repairs needed in certain sections of the route.
R44 Clarence Drive is not only a vital local thoroughfare but also a popular scenic route for tourists. The reopening is a significant step in restoring normalcy and economic activity in the region, especially for communities reliant on the route for trade and tourism.
Motorists are advised to exercise caution and adhere to the traffic controls in place.
