Comic-Con Cape Town will look to continue its streak of delivering a top-draw festival and on Saturday, a sold-out crowd will be anticipating a schedule packed with entertainment and pop culture shockers on Day 3.
Comic-Con Cape Town: Gaming zone steals the show on Day 2
On the second day of Comic-Con Cape Town, thousands of fans adorned in authentic cosplays gathered outside the CTICC, waiting to immerse themselves in a geek-fueled universe.
With renowned actors such as Tati Gabrielle, Jason Moore, Ross Marquand, and Kat Graham returning to the main stage, guests eagerly engaged with their favourite actors, streamers, illustrators, and cosplayers through a question-and-answer format in the Guest Spotlight Sessions.
Apart from the Guest Spotlight Sessions, various activities were available for attendees.
The Doritos Crunch Cup provided daily gaming competitions, inviting Call of Duty players to compete for a chance to win the daily prize of R7 000 and an Xbox.
Gamers also had the opportunity to participate in Telkom VS Gaming’s FIFA King of the Hill competition, where the reigning SAFA e-cup champion, Zaid April, joined guests to provide them with a sense of real competition.
Young William Prinston, a nine-year-old gamer from Pretoria, flew to Cape Town with his family to immerse himself in the gaming experiences on offer, saying,
“It’s so exciting to be at Comic Con Cape Town! It means a lot that I’m here at the festival because I really want to become a gamer one day. Out of all the games I play, Fortnite has to be my favourite.”
For animation enthusiasts, the Cape Town International Animation Festival (CTIAF) had various activities in store. French-produced anime was spotlighted, and Director and Animator Ulysse Malassagne took the audience through the past decade of the animation industry, highlighting the challenges of crafting 2D animations.
Character Animator Annike Pienaar discussed her favourite projects, including Sing 2 and Revolting Rhymes, which received international recognition, while Warner Media Africa’s Head of Kids Channels, Ariane Suveg, enlightened enthusiasts on what broadcasters want them to know about the content creation and industry as a whole.
The festival also celebrated female animators’ achievements, screening the best female-directed short films submitted to the Annecy International Animation Film Festival held in Annecy, France. The Protea Room at CTICC 2 hosted a five-and-a-half-hour workshop on how to create your first cinematic shot.
Moreover, local and international artists and illustrators were featured in the Pop Culture Content Zone, but the creativity of African artists shone throughout.
Sean Izaakse spoke to fans about his latest project, DC’s Green Arrows, where he redesigned the iconic character’s costume and added his spin to its look and feel. On the Artist Alley Spotlight Stage, satirical cartoonist Zapiro discussed the impact of cartooning and how it connects people worldwide.
Streamers had their day filled with hacks on how to elevate their content at StreamerCon. Hero27_Creations, Chloe_ZA, DaddyCOolZA, ConCon, and RustyPieLovers equipped budding creators with knowledge on how to gain followers and increased engagement, one of the most challenging aspects of building an online community as a streamer.
