The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate in Cape Town has announced planned maintenance work across various areas from 11 to 15 December 2023. This essential activity is expected to cause temporary water supply disruptions.
These areas to be affected by Cape Town water maintenance
Key areas affected include:
- Oakdale;
- Blommendal;
- Blomtuin;
- Eikenbosch; and
- Chrismar.
These areas will undergo pressure management installations and zero-pressure tests on Tuesday, 12 December from 10:00 to 16:00.
Additionally, parts of Gordon’s Bay, Fairview Heights, Macassar Village, Southfield, Plumstead, Diep River, Elfindale, and Retreat will experience disruptions as the maintenance team works on pipe and valve installations, repairs, and replacements.
Purpose of maintenance and preparation for residents
The Directorate’s maintenance work aims to manage water pressure effectively, reducing pipe bursts and water wastage.
This is part of the City’s Water Demand Management Strategy, focusing on preserving the pipeline’s lifespan and preventing water loss.
Residents are encouraged to store sufficient water for domestic use, as some neighbourhoods will face intermittent water supply interruptions.
The City has planned the maintenance work to minimize inconvenience, ensuring it occurs during times that least disrupt the water supply.
Residents should be aware that the maintenance sites are considered construction areas and are off-limits to the public. There might be instances of complex work extending the expected duration.
After the water supply is restored, temporary discolouration or a milky appearance may occur due to trapped air in the pipes.
