The 2022 Gun Run takes place in Cape Town this weekend, and for motorists, these road closures will be essential to curtail what may be a nightmare of a driving experience in the centre city and Atlantic Seaboard.
Everything you need to know about the 2022 Gun Run
The OUTSurance Gun Run returns this year for a two-day event jam-packed with fun races and activities that will make for a fun weekend out with the family..
In 2022, the weekend event will feature five races:
- The 21.1km half-marathon
- The 10km race
- 15km trail run (new in 2022)
- 5km fun run
- 5km pet walk (new in 2022)
The first event, the 15km trail run, takes place on Saturday, 17 September 2022, at 07:30, at the Van Riebeek Park in Oranjezicht. Here is the schedule for the rest of the 2022 Gun Run weekend:
Saturday, 17 September 2022
- 15km trail run: The starting point is at Van Riebeeck Park, Oranjezicht, at 07:30
- 5km fun run: The starting point is at Stephen Way, Greenpoint, at 08:00
- 5km pet walk: The starting point is at Stephen Way, Greenpoint, at 08:30
Sunday, 18 September 2022
- 21.1km half-marathon: The starting point is at Fritz Sonnenberg Road, Green Point, at 06:30
- 10km race: The starting point is at Fritz Sonnenberg Road, Green Point, at 07:30
The finish venue will be at the Green Point Common, opposite the Green Point Cricket Club. The venue will host space for families to picnic, food stalls and a kiddies play area.
Keeping in line with Gun Run tradition, the battlefield canon from the Cape Field Artillery will be fired to signal the end of the race.
Cape Town road closures to look out for this weekend
Cape Town motorists are advised to take note of the following road closures that will be in place either for the duration of the 2022 Gun Run or at specified time periods.
Roads to avoid include:
- Vlei Road at Helen Suzman Boulevard;
- Helen Suzman Boulevard roundabout at Granger Bay Boulevard;
- Fritz Sonnenberg Road at Granger Bay Boulevard;
- Fritz Sonnenberg Road at Bay Road;
- Beach Road at Granger Bay Boulevard;
- Beach Roat at Helen Suzman Boulevard;
- Beach Rd at Three Anchor Bay Rd;
- Three Bay Rd at Main Rd;
- Queen Rd at Beach Rd (in-bound);
- Queens Rd at Regent Rd;
- Regent Rd at Clarens Rd – Both directions – Expect delays;
- Kloof Rd & Queens Rd – Both directions – Expect delays;
- Kloof Rd & Lower Kloof Rd – NO access along Kloof Rd. Detour via Lower Kloof Rd. Expect delays;
- Victoria Rd at Lower Kloof Rd-City outbound – NO access onto Lower Kloof Rd. Expect delays;
- Victoria Rd at Lower Kloof Rd-City bound – NO access onto Lower Kloof Rd. Expect delays;
- Victoria Rd at Camps Bay Dr – Victoria Rd City bound closed – Detour via Camps Bay Dr – Kloof Nek Rd;
- Victoria Rd at Houghton Rd – Victoria Rd City bound closed – Detour via Houghton Rd Three Bay Rd at Main Rd Road Closure – Camps Bay Dr – Kloof Nek Rd; and
- Kloof Rd at Camps Bay Dr – Local Access Only – Kloof / Lower Kloof Rd closed – Detour via Camps Bay Dr
