A sombre mood has engulfed Rand Water following the shocking and violent death of one of the company’s executives.
Rand Water executive targeted in alleged assassination
The tragic incident unfolded in the presence of pupils attending a back-to-school campaign at a community hall in Zakariyya Park, Johannesburg, on Monday, 29 January 2024.
Gauteng police are fervently pursuing a group of suspects responsible for the shooting, which resulted in two fatalities, including the Rand Water executive, and left three others wounded.
According to Gauteng police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, the assailants stormed into the hall during a donation function and opened fire before escaping in a white vehicle.
Rand Water’s spokesperson, Makenosi Maroo, conveyed the organisation’s profound shock and sorrow over the tragic loss of their colleague.
“As an organisation, we are shocked and devastated by the tragic passing of our treasured colleague,” Maroo said.
The company, bereft of further details, is collaborating closely with the authorities in their ongoing investigation.
The violence also reached the City of Johannesburg Chief Whip Sithembiso Zungu, who was wounded during the event.
Zungu is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed medical facility. It is understood that the City of Joburg was invited by Rand Water to distribute uniforms to local pupils, a noble gesture marred by this senseless act of violence.
Rand Water, in a statement, acknowledged the tragic loss of their esteemed colleague and requested the media and public to respect the sensitive nature of the situation, particularly for the executive’s family and fellow employees.
“The water utility does not have further details but are working closely with investigators as they assess and investigate the tragic incident. We will be providing updates as they are released to us,” the company added.
