Details about the incident were still trickling in when this article was published. However, based on the information at our disposal, tensions erupted into violence near a Somali economic hub in Vereeniging, on Saturday, 13 January 2024, after an e-hailer crashed into a courier bike.
Crowds quickly gathered near the accident scene, where a fiery confrontation between the e-hailer, a black man, and a group of vexed Somali nationals quickly escalated.
From what we understand, to prevent the e-hailer from leaving the scene of the accident, the Somali mob allegedly punctured the man’s tyres, and before he could get on the phone to call for help, he was ambushed.
A private security guard from Sekuriteit Sonder Grense intervened, while another eyewitness, only identified in the video as ‘Mandla’, removed a holster from the e-hailer.
It’s unclear if the e-hailer was armed with a loaded weapon, albeit shrieks from a woman heard in the footage suggest he was.
The situation went from bad to worse when, in an attempt to separate the e-hailer from the Somali mob, the Sekuriteit guard was attacked too.
Swisher Post contacted the Vereeniging security company for comment but a response was not received when this article was published.
