Saturday’s Tremor
On Saturday, 22 July 2023, several areas in Johannesburg were jolted by an earth tremor that occurred just after 19:00. Communities in Krugersdorp on the West Rand and Soweto reported feeling the shaking ground.
Social media users took to Twitter to share their experiences and concerns about the tremor.
Joburg mayor Panyaza Lesufi also took to Twitter, assuring the public that the reported tremor was under investigation.
Panyaza confirmed emergency teams were dispatched to comb the affected areas for any signs of damage or injuries.
“We are awaiting official confirmation of the #Tremor around Roodepoort/Kagiso/Soweto area. Our emergency teams are combing the area,” he tweeted.
Frequency of Tremors in Johannesburg
If the latest seismic event is confirmed as a tremor, it will be the third one to hit Johannesburg in the last month. On Sunday, 11 June 2023, a 5.0 magnitude earthquake struck parts of Gauteng, with its epicentre believed to be near Alberton or Boksburg on the East Rand.
This was followed by another incident on Thursday, 29 June 2023, where ground shaking possibly due to an earthquake was reported in or near Johannesburg.
City Engineers Investigate Explosion Incident
In addition to the recent tremors, Johannesburg faced another scare when a mysterious explosion occurred near Bree Street Taxi Rank, causing significant damage and injuring over 40 people.
