City Power confirms Reuven power outage on Friday, 12 April 2024
City Power reported that the outage was triggered by an issue at the Showground Substation, affecting not only the immediate area but also surrounding regions.
The specific cause of the substation’s trip is currently under investigation by operators, who were alerted immediately following the incident.
“Operators have been notified to investigate. We will provide more information in subsequent updates. We apologise for the inconvenience caused,” the service provider wrote in a statement.
Precautions to take during an unplanned power outage
During unexpected power outages, safety and preparedness are paramount. Here are some essential precautions to help residents manage the situation effectively:
- Stay Informed: Keep a battery-powered or hand-crank radio handy to receive updates from local authorities and utility services.
- Avoid Electrical Hazards: Do not touch electrical equipment if you are wet or standing in water. This reduces the risk of electrocution.
- Use Flashlights, Not Candles: To prevent fire hazards, use flashlights or battery-operated lanterns instead of candles for emergency lighting.
- Keep Refrigerators and Freezers Closed: Minimise the number of times you open refrigerator and freezer doors. Food can stay cold for about four hours in a fridge and about 48 hours in a freezer if the doors remain closed.
- Disconnect Appliances: Unplug electrical appliances to protect them from potential surges when power is restored. However, keep one light on to know when power returns.
- Prepare an Emergency Kit: Maintain an emergency kit that includes water, non-perishable food, first aid supplies, and medications.
- Check on Neighbours: If safe, check on elderly neighbours or those who may need additional assistance during the outage.
