A 33-year-old suspected cash-in-transit robber is currently under police guard after his arrest on Thursday, 9 November 2023.
Mvusuludzo Mall cash-in-transit suspect arrested after four years on the run
The suspect’s apprehension stems from a high-profile incident that occurred on 15 March 2019, at Mvusuludzo Mall in Thohoyandou, police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Matimba Maluleke revealed in a statement.
According to Lt-Col Maluleke, a G4S Cash Solutions security guard was ambushed and attacked by three armed assailants while collecting money from various shops.
The guard engaged in a shootout with the assailants, resulting in his severe injury and the theft of the cash he was transporting.
Additionally, three bystanders sustained injuries during the chaotic episode.
Fast forward to Sunday, 5 November 2023, the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team, in collaboration with the Vhembe Trio Task Team, received crucial information about the whereabouts of the suspect.
He was initially located at Tshilidzini Hospital due to a vehicle accident. However, upon the team’s arrival, they discovered he had been transferred to another private facility by family members.
The ongoing investigation led authorities to Gauteng, where they eventually located the suspect in a hospital. He was immediately placed under arrest.
The suspect is now facing grave charges, including robbery and four counts of attempted murder.
Major General Gopz Govender, the Provincial Head of the Hawks in Limpopo, expressed satisfaction with the arrest and assured the public that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects involved in the 2019 heist.
