Four alleged bank robbery suspects were shot dead by Durban police in Harding during a shootout following a robbery incident.
Durban bank robbery suspects killed in shootout
According to reports, the incident unfolded when a group of robbers targeted a businessman after he visited a bank.
The suspects were intercepted by a coordinated police operation involving members of the DPCI provincial tracking team, DPCI anti-gang unit, PMB K9, provincial TRT, and Magma Security and Investigations.
The confrontation began when the suspects, upon spotting the police, opened fire from their getaway vehicle. A fierce gunfight ensued, resulting in the deaths of all four suspects. Remarkably, no police officers were injured during the shootout.
This incident comes on the heels of another high-profile police operation in KwaZulu-Natal. Just a week prior, two suspected cash-in-transit (CIT) robbers were killed during a shootout with police in Kranskop, north of the province.
The suspects had been involved in a bank robbery and were pursued by officers across different locations.
During the pursuit, the suspects opened fire on the police after one of their vehicles crashed, leading to a deadly confrontation.
In the Kranskop incident, police recovered a large sum of undisclosed cash and three rifles from the suspects’ vehicle in Phoenix.
KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi confirmed that this group had been under surveillance for some time.
“It is part of the team and that group, there was a heist yesterday in Kranskop, and of course, they always operate with someone within the companies,” said Mkhwanazi at the time.
