Cape Town police have made a breakthrough in the murder investigation of detective Charl Kinnear after feared underworld boss Nafiz Modack was arrested on Thursday.
Nafiz Modack arrested: Is he linked to Charl Kinnear?
Nabbing Modack, a man with close ties to the bloody war over security control in the Cape Town nightclub scene, is a step closer to closing the Kinnear case, according to Police Minister Bheki Cele.
In September 2020, Kinnear, lead detective in the nightclub extortion racket, was killed in cold blood outside of his home in Bishop Lavis. Thus far, one suspect, Zane Kilian, the alleged assailant in the cop killing, is on trial for the murder and his next court appearance is scheduled for Monday 24 May 2021.
The other link to the murder, according to police, is Modack and on Thursday, the alleged crime boss was slapped with conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder, extortion and kidnapping charges.
He and three others who were taken down after a dramatic car chase in Century City are expected to appear at a Cape Town court, on Monday 3 May 2021.
Based on the evidence collected thus far, it’s widely believed Modack allegedly masterminded the detective’s death.

The suspects, driving a Mercedez Benz and a Toyota Hilux, didn’t make it far before they were cornered on Sable Road.
“Inside the Mercedes with two occupants that was stopped, two unlicensed firearms were recovered. In the second vehicle, a Toyota Hilux with two occupants, an unlicensed firearm was recovered,” Cele noted
All four suspects, aged between 29 and 49, were cuffed and thrown in jail.
