My Name is Reeva, a three-part documentary series exclusive to M-Net following the tragic murder of model Reeva Steenkamp. Nine years after the shocking event that took place on Valentine’s Day in 2013, M-Net’s docuseries looks at Steenkamp’s life and the events that led up to her violent death.
‘My Name is Reeva’: What we know about the upcoming M-Net documentary
Nearly a decade later, South Africans still mourne Steenkamp, who was brutally murdered by her Paralympian boyfriend, Oscar Pistorius. The announcement of the docuseries comes just weeks after Pistorius met with Steenkamp’s family as part of his parole process, which the former track runner is now eligible for.
The story sets back in 2013 when Pistorius shot his girlfriend Steenkamp at his Pretoria home. The Paralympian claims he mistook his girlfriend for a burglar and fired four times through a toilet door. In 2015, at the conclusion of the trial, the athlete was convicted of murder and sentenced to 13 years and five months in prison.
M-Net announced the My Name is Reeva documentary series on their social media platforms.
Her family is now ready to disclose information about her life, her relationship with Pistorius, and the murder that captivated the world.
Produced by Warren Bachelor of WB Productions in partnership with Cactus Tree Entertainment, Bloodrose Productions and Australia’s Global City Group. The documentary was also directed by Bachelor of WB Productions, who is a two-time SA Film and TV Awards (SAFTA) nominated director, producer and writer. The scriptwriter is credited to Justin Strydom.
Having acquired the rights for the documentary, M-Net stated:
“The docuseries gives life to Reeva’s existence through intimate interviews with her parents as well as close friends and family, showing that a beautiful, intelligent, and beloved woman was taken in the prime of her life. It presents you with an in-depth analysis of what happened that fateful night; and it tells you of the effect her death had on those who loved her most.”
Steenkamp’s parents approve of the documentary, telling M-Net:
“We fully endorse Warren and his team to bring out the truth in this documentary and show the world who Reeva was.”
Cactus Tree Entertainment’s co-presidents, Benn Watson and Liz Levenson, shared the same sentiment, stating:
“Too often, and especially in this case, the victims of crimes are overlooked. Along with our amazing production partners and the Steenkamp family, we are honoured to be able to bring this story to screen.”
