Kendrick Lamar left fans wanting more when he resurfaced with two prominent features on his cousin and pgLang’s first acquisition Baby Keem’s debut album, but it seems we are nowhere near getting the promised final TDE album.
Kendrick Lamar to produce comedy film
As reported by Billboard, the 34-year-old and his longtime friend, music video director and co-founder of pgLang Dave Free, are teaming up with South Park co-creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker to produce a new comedy film for Paramount Pictures.
At this time, the film remains without a title, cast or director. However, according to Vernon Chatman, who comes onboard as scriptwriter, the film is about “the past and present coming to a head when a young black man, who is interning as a slave re-enactor at a living history museum, discovers that his white girlfriend’s ancestors once owned his.”
This will be pgLang’s first venture into the film industry and Lamar is very much involved in the entire process. No dates have been released as yet, but from what we understand, production is expected to kick off in spring (autumn in the Southern Hemisphere).
Paramount Pictures, it’s believed, will come onboard as the film’s theatrical and digital distributor.
What we know about Lamar’s new album
It has been about five years since Lamar’s last album. DAMN. came out in April 2017 and obliterated charts, raking in 603 000 unit sales In its first week.
The album went on to win five Grammys and earned him a historic nod at the 2018 Pulitzer.
In 2018, Lamar played a central role in TDE’s production of Marvel’s The Black Panther soundtrack, which featured a number of South African acts.
The soundtrack album earned eight Grammy nominations in 2019 and walked away with Best Rap Performance for King’s Dead.
Lamar made it very clear on Keem’s family ties that he is coming for Hip-Hop’s Top 5 and the wait would not be long. His fans and peers were certain the new album was going to drop in the last quarter of 2021, but the year ended and reset to a new calendar without a word from K.Dot.
However, based on Souwave’s (his producer) latest and only Instagram post, something big is definitely on the way.
