In the absence of Cyril Ramaphosa, Angie Motshekga has been sworn in as Acting President of South Africa, an appointment that’s caused rumblings on social media.
Angie Motshekga stands in for Ramaphosa
Of course, South Africa’s head of state is in Zambia to attend the funeral of the late Kenneth Kaunda and his deputy David Mabuza is on a medical holiday in Russia.
For a day, Motshekga will vacate her swamped Basic Education office and wield Executive control over the affairs of the nation.
Generally, Ramaphosa chooses trusted members of his Cabinet to hold his position whenever he travels out of the country for extended periods. Mabuza has, on a number of occasions, served as Acting President. The late Jackson Thembu was also favourite to the title.
This time, with few options to pick from, Ramaphosa looked to Motshekga, whose tenure in the Basic Education portfolio has not been smooth to say the least, to lead South Africa on Friday.
Social media reacts to President Motshekga
Give South Africans the opportunity to clown and you’ll leave the circus in stitches. Reactions to Motshekga’s appointment have been, well, nothing short of creative.
