Bulelwa ‘Zahara’ Mkutukana may be in the thick of it and with her fifth album scheduled for release soon, the last thing she needs is the tax evasion case she’s meddled in.
Zahara fined for dodging court
Reports have surfaced claiming that the Loliwe songstress was found guilty of being in contempt of court on several occasions in her case against SARS.
On Monday, Zahara handed herself over to authorities and appeared before the Palm Ridge specialised commercial crimes court where she was allegedly fined R1 500 for her repeated failure to show up at the docks. In the event that she could not fork out the fine amount, the songstress’ second option was a three-month jail term.
Zahara, in her personal capacity, and her company Zahara Trading, is facing the full might of the law for allegedly failing to submit tax returns. At this time, no further information is available on the merits of the case.
Zahara’s passport confiscated, movement restricted by court
Representatives of the singer have refused to entertain queries from the media. Warner Music SA’s Eric Gyimah indicated that Zahara was not available for comment as she is preparing “for her album release next month.”
From what we understand, the court has confiscated Zahara’s passport and while she was allowed to roam free, there are strict conditions she must adhere to. For instance, she has to sign a register at the Roodepoort police station every Tuesday and Thursday between 08:00 and 18:00, a contingency measure taken to ensure she doesn’t skip the country.
Her next court date is scheduled for Friday 25 June 2021.
