Herman Mashaba is the latest ex-member of the DA to smear the party on social media, a trend that seems to have picked up a bit of steam recently.
No love lost between Herman Mashaba and Helen Zille
This year alone, the likes of Mmusi Maimane, former leader of the opposition party, Phumzile van Damme, and now Mashaba, have publicly stated their disdain for the DA.
In the case of Gauteng’s former mayor, however, he may have been targeted by the DA federal chair Helen Zille unprovoked. In a recent interview with JJ Tabane, Zille covered many topics.
The 70-year-old author shared her views on the ‘Digital Vibes’ scandal facing Health Minister Zweli Mkhize. She also reflected on Mashaba’s tenure as Gauteng mayor and revealed more insight into his breakup up with the DA.
In not so many words, Zille indicated that for the DA, the line was drawn in the sand when Mashaba bent over backwards for their coalition partner in Gauteng, the EFF.
She also indirectly hinted that Mashaba may have lobbed questionable tenders to EFF associates, an issue, she said, needed a thorough probe.
Mashaba: ‘DA keeps mutilating its brand unprovoked’
Soon after this interview aired, Mashaba caught wind of it through the social media grapevine. His response, if anything, was a clear indication of the state of his relationship with the political party he once represented wholeheartedly.
In a tweet, Mashaba charged at the DA and Zille, stating that the party “can’t seem to stop mutilating their brand totally unprovoked.”

The Action SA leader didn’t mince his words to the hecklers who jumped on the bandwagon.
It is SAD that 27 years into the new South Africa we can have people like Martin who believes inclusion of government services to poor communities is not part of DA policies. South Africans deserve better. A party that believes in Social Justice https://t.co/3J396sStGw
