A deadly N1 north accident involving a minibus taxi has caused major traffic delays in Johannesburg, with motorists urged to use alternative routes.

N1 North accident johannesburg

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has confirmed a fatal N1 north accident between the Buccleuch Interchange and Allandale Road in Midrand.

What happened on the N1 north?

According to officials, the crash involved a single vehicle — a minibus taxi that overturned on the freeway. Emergency services rushed to the scene where five people were confirmed dead, and several others sustained injuries.

Currently, the far-right lane of the N1 north is blocked. JMPD has warned that a full closure of the freeway will be necessary soon to allow investigators and emergency workers to clear the scene.

Traffic is already severely backed up, with delays stretching in both directions. Motorists travelling between Johannesburg and Pretoria are advised to avoid this part of the freeway.

The JMPD has urged drivers to use alternative routes to ease pressure on the N1 north. While exact diversion points were not announced, drivers are encouraged to consider routes through Woodmead, Midrand backroads, or the R55where possible.

“Motorists can expect heavy delays in both directions on the N1 freeway. We strongly advise all road users to avoid this section and to exercise patience,” the JMPD said in a statement.

Emergency services on scene

Paramedics and law enforcement remain at the site, treating the injured and recovering the victims.

Recovery operations — which include removing the wrecked minibus taxi and investigating the cause of the accident — are expected to take several hours.

Motorists passing through the affected area are urged to drive slowly and allow emergency workers the space to carry out their duties.
