Bing Liu, a prominent research professor from the University of Pittsburgh, was found dead in his home on Saturday 2 May.
Who killed Bing Liu?
As reported by CNN, he had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the head, neck, torso and extremities. In a car parked outside of his townhouse, an unidentified man — believed be his killer — was found dead too.
Based on reports from the Ross Police Department, the investigation is still ongoing but everything points to a murder-suicide. However, investigators made it clear that they don’t believe that this was a hate crime linked to Bing Liu’s ethnicity.
The university issued a statement shortly after the news broke of the professor’s death. In it, it was revealed that Bing Liu was on the verge of a breakthrough in his research into coronavirus (COVID-19).
“Bing was on the verge of making very significant findings toward understanding the cellular mechanisms that underlie SARS-CoV-2 infection and the cellular basis of the following complications,” the statement read.
