An in-flight disturbance on Boxing Day has resulted in a woman being placed on FlySafair’s no-fly list.
Watch: Drunk woman causes stir mid-FlySafair flight
The incident occurred on a flight from Durban to Cape Town, where the passenger’s behaviour spiralled out of control following an argument over the drinks service.
Video footage taken by fellow passengers captured the woman clashing with flight attendants.
In the footage, she can be seen standing in the aisle, insisting on being served a drink, and at one point, forcibly attempting to move a flight attendant by pulling her head.
FlySafair spokesperson Kirby Gordon confirmed that the situation was brought under control with the assistance of other passengers.
“We condemn any behaviour of this nature. Flight attendants have a primary duty as safety officers and interfering with their duties is a criminal offence,” Gordon stated.
When the plane landed in Cape Town, the woman was handed over to police.
“This passenger will be placed on our no-fly list and will not be welcome on future FlySafair flights,” Gordon said, adding that after police take over such cases, the airline does not receive further updates.
Is a FlySafair no-fly list a lifetime ban?
Being placed on a no-fly list has significant implications for passengers.
According to FlySafair’s terms and conditions, individuals on this list are barred from flying with the airline, and all their existing bookings are cancelled.
Moreover, they are prohibited from making any new reservations until they settle any outstanding actions against them.
The duration of the ban is not standard and depends entirely on the airline’s discretion.
“It will further be at our sole discretion to determine the period of the ban and/or whether to have you removed from the No-Fly List or not,” FlySafair clarifies.
It is important to remember that flight attendants are safety officers first, and any interference with their duties is considered a serious offence that could lead to legal consequences.
In this case, the disruptive behaviour has likely grounded one passenger indefinitely.
