A search effort is underway to track down the Uber driver who was caught on camera launching at two female passengers.
Cape Town Uber driver attacks female passengers on camera
Details around the incident are, thus far, only represented from the passengers’ perspective. According to one of the women, Tsholo, she and her mate booked an Uber trip without checking to see that the payment method was set to ‘credit’ and not cash.
Well, this communication blip was central to the driver’s frustration, a man only identified by his vehicle registration plates and his Uber profile name, ‘Kalonji’.
“We tried to give the driver options of him using the credit we already had on our uber or withdrawing the money .. the driver immediately got very furious and started shouting at us, I tried to explain that it’s not cool to shout at us while we are trying to figure out a way to solve all this cause we were just by a garage and willing to withdraw cash and give him, but he just kept on interrupting us,” the woman wrote.
The video footage showing the driver leaning into the backseat of his vehicle, in an attempt to snatch the woman’s phone out of her hands, surfaced on social media, causing an uproar that attracted the attention of the global e-hailing giant.
In a statement, Uber’s support account confirmed the matter has been escalated to their investigation division.
“We can assure you we’re working 24/7, and we’ll continue to work to create a better environment for all the app users in South Africa. Each report we receive is helpful for us in assessing the situation for better resolution,” Uber wrote in resposne to the viral video clip.
