Social media has been in a frenzy over a viral video clip supposedly showing the robbery of an Engen garage in Nyanga, Cape Town.
Nyanga Engen robbery was not real
In the video clip that was first shared on TikTok, by an up-and-coming Capetonian actor Mfundo Wayile. In it, two ‘armed’ men are seen running out of the garage with two sacks, supposedly holding cash. The ‘robbers’ run into a white vehicle before pulling off.
Oh no. They robbed Engen Garage, right next to Nyanga Saps. These guys are brave. To me, this also looks like an inside job. pic.twitter.com/LcKuzMfxFs

Taken along with the context of the location this scene played out in, it didn’t take much convincing to sway people into believing that this was a real-life robbery.
After all, similar scenes play out in South Africa, on a daily basis. For example, 10 women were robbed of their cellphones, wallets and jewellery inside a swimming school in Wierdabrug, on Tuesday afternoon.
Alas, following the spread of the Nyanga Engen garage robbery clip, we did some digging and it didn’t take much of an effort to find out that this was not real.
What many viewers who’ve since shared the ‘robbery’ clip did not realise was that another video was posted, showing behind-the-scenes footage of an upcoming local film The Alliance.
