Motorists were driving along a highway in Volgograd, Russia, when suddenly, a huge ball of fire engulfed the sky and was followed by a large cloud of thick smoke.
What caused the explosion?
At this time, the details surrounding the cause of the massive explosion have yet to be confirmed.
However, according to a statement released by the Russian Emergency Ministry, the blast may be linked to a propane tank that caught fire at a petrol station in Volgograd’s Traktorozavodsky district.
Did the massive explosion in Russia cause any deaths?
At the time of publishing this article, no deaths were reported in the incident.
Express UK had initially reported that the colossal blast caught six people. However, it’s believed the injuries tally has quickly risen to 13 after it was reported that rescuers also sustained injuries in the explosion.
Fortunately, the fire has since been contained and all victims were transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
This incident comes a week after similar scenes were observed in Beirut, Lebanon. A port located near the home of former Prime Minister Saad Hariri went up in flames and took down a building, killing more than 137 people.
The massive explosion, which is still under intense scrutiny, had a shockwave radius of about 12km and the Lebanese capital, already dealing with heightened levels of poverty and unemployment, is still reeling from this highly avoidable incident.
