The Boeing 777, carrying 389 passengers, departed around 20:45 (02:45 SAST), but within minutes, the aircraft encountered a problem that forced it to turn back.
Videos captured by passengers and shared widely on social media show the dramatic moments as the plane, flight AC872, struggled with what appeared to be a compressor stall.
The footage reveals an orange flashing glow from the engine, a clear indication that something was wrong.
After notifying air traffic control of the issue, the pilots decided to return to Pearson for an emergency landing.
The aircraft landed safely at approximately 21:50 (03:50 SAST), where it was met by emergency response vehicles from the airport’s fire department.
Air Canada reported that the plane managed to taxi to the gate on its own power, despite the engine trouble.
Air Canada issued a statement acknowledging the incident, emphasising that safety protocols were followed to ensure the passengers’ well-being.
“After the aircraft landed, it was inspected by airport response vehicles as per normal operating processes, and it taxied to the gate on its own,” the airline confirmed.
Following the inspection, the Boeing 777 was taken out of service for a thorough evaluation by maintenance staff and engineers to determine the cause of the engine failure.
The airline assured that all passengers were transferred to another aircraft, which departed for Paris at 01:32 (07:32 SAST) on Thursday, minimising disruption to their travel plans.
