On Monday, a number of roads in Tembisa, Gauteng, have either been closed off to traffic or subjected to heavy congestion due to ongoing protest action.
Tembisa protests: What are residents demands?
Protest action is no stranger to the East Rand township. Many of the violent demonstrations to come out of Tembisa have, over the years, been related to service delivery issues.
With regards to Monday’s unrest, no official statement has been released by the organisation responsible for the picketing. Therefore, it remains unclear, at this stage, what may have fuelled these demonstrations.
Roads to avoid on Monday 14 June 2021
Images have surfaced online, showing a snapshot of the tensions brewing in Tembisa. At the time this article was published, public order police had descended on the township in an effort to quell the violence and restore order on the roads.

However, things have not improved on this front. A number of roads have experienced heavy congestion due to key routes being blocked off with rocks, burning tyres and rubble.
The following roads have been flagged as high-risk areas motorists should avoid on Monday:
- Link Road;
- Sam Molele Road;
- Pretoria Road; and
- Winnie Mandela Road.
Motorists travelling in these routes are likely to be attacked by protestors or, at the very least, move in the line of fire as tensions continue to brew in the township.
This is a developing story.
