Correctional Services officials, alongside members of the South African Police Services, conducted an intensive search operation on Wednesday night.
The raid, aimed at rooting out contraband and enhancing security measures, uncovered a shocking array of illegal items.
Authorities seized numerous contraband items, including cellphones, WiFi routers, PlayStation consoles, and dagga.
National Correctional Services Commissioner Makgothi Thobakgale stated:
“We are here as part of the clean-up operation that we have been engaged in for the past three months in different correctional facilities. These are correctional facilities that we have identified based on the information that we have been able to ascertain. We are actually doing a search for contraband. Objects that are not allowed in the correctional facility, especially in the cells.”
Footage from the raid showed officials removing various gadgets and items from inmates’ cells.
The items seized also included TVs, smartphones, knives, screwdrivers, makeup, nail polish, and even a sex toy.
The presence of such items indicates a significant lapse in security and a high level of corruption, as inmates were able to smuggle these items into the facility.
The raid was part of a broader initiative inspired by the viral video of Bornface Banks, an inmate at Goodwood Correctional Facility.
Banks was seen bragging about his luxurious prison life, surrounded by contraband items.
This video prompted the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) to take immediate action, leading to heightened security measures and more frequent raids across various correctional centres.
Corruption at Correctional Centres: How Contraband is Smuggled into Prisons
The discovery of such extensive contraband in Sun City prison casts a spotlight on the deep-rooted corruption within South Africa’s correctional facilities.
Inmates often gain access to prohibited items through collusion with corrupt wardens and correctional officers. These officials smuggle in contraband in exchange for bribes, exploiting their positions to bypass security measures.
Common methods of smuggling include hiding items in food deliveries, using laundry services, and taking advantage of visits from family members and lawyers.
In some cases, drones have been used to drop contraband into prison yards. The sophisticated nature of these smuggling operations points to the challenges faced by the authorities in maintaining security and order within these facilities.
In the wake of the recent raids, it is expected that stringent measures will be taken against any wardens found complicit in smuggling contraband.
This could include suspension, dismissal, and criminal charges.
The Department of Correctional Services is likely to implement more rigorous screening processes and enhance surveillance to prevent future occurrences.
