The 62-year-old was addressing attendees when he reportedly felt lightheaded due to the heat, which reached up to 36 degrees Celsius on the day.
Mashatile’s spokesperson, Keith Khoza, confirmed that the deputy president was immediately attended to by his medical team and has since been declared in good health.
“The deputy president is fine after undergoing a medical checkup,” said Khoza, adding that Mashatile had returned to Gauteng following the incident.
Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba, who was present at the event, explained that Mashatile’s condition was likely caused by heat exhaustion and dehydration.
“There’s no reason for South Africans to panic. The deputy president is in good spirits,” said Ramathuba, noting that the high temperatures in the region were likely a contributing factor.
