Eskom confirms loadshedding schedule: Here’s what you need to know

In an effort to bring a semblance of stability to South Africa’s raging energy crisis, the national electricity supplier rolled out its plan to manage rotational power cuts for the rest of the week.

From Tuesday until Friday, November 2022, loadshedding will be implemented between Stages 1 and 2 during morning and evening peak periods.

Stage 1 loadshedding will be effective between 05:00 and 16:00 during the day. Thereafter, from 16:00 until 05:00 the next morning, rotational power outages will be escalated to Stage 2.

The intertwining schedule, Eskom explained, is an effort to “preserve emergency generation reserves.”

The state-owned energy supplier also revealed that loadshedding has been prolonged by ongoing delays “in returning four generating units to service.”

“The delay in the return of two generating units at Camden, one unit each at Kendal and Matimba power stations have contributed to the generation capacity shortages,” Eskom explained.

The power utility was careful not to indicate when the public should expect an end to this exhaustive bout of loadshedding. However, Eskom did reveal that currently, “many [power generating] units are operating at reduced capacity due to technical faults.”

On Tuesday morning, Eskom had:

  • 3 945MW of energy capacity out on planned maintenance; while
  • another 14 499MW of power was not feeding the grid due to unplanned breakdowns.
