Watch: Gauteng traffic officer assaulting Ekurhuleni police
A video that has gone viral shows a shocking altercation between a Gauteng traffic officer and Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) officers.
In the footage, the male traffic officer is seen swearing at and making obscene gestures towards a female EMPD officer, calling her illiterate and a clown.
The confrontation occurred after the EMPD officers stopped a female motorist driving a vehicle with foreign number plates for inspection.
The motorist, seeking assistance, contacted the Gauteng traffic officer who arrived at the scene and began insulting and interfering with the duties of the EMPD officers.
In the video, the traffic officer can be heard threatening the EMPD officers, claiming he would take their pension funds.
The City of Ekurhuleni issued a statement confirming that a case of intimidation, common assault, grievous bodily harm, defeating the ends of justice, and interfering with police duties has been opened against the officer.
Gauteng MMC for Community Safety Sizakele Masuku expressed strong condemnation of the incident.
She emphasised that no officer is above the law and that such behaviour is unacceptable.
“Our duty is to enforce the law, and the so-called ‘Super Sheriff’ of Gauteng will not intimidate our officers or stop the work of the EMPD,” she stated.
Masuku also revealed that this is not the first incident involving the traffic officer.
He is currently under investigation for two previous cases of assault and has been accused of beating people on the streets.
