Egypt has been a tourist destination for decades, if not centuries. Whilst the December holidays are fast approaching; it may be time to pack your bags and plan your trip away.
Why should you visit Egypt in 2022?
Egypt has been placed in the top 100 tourist destinations. Well, with so much history, culture, and architecture, it is no wonder the attraction towards it by tourists has been so great. For many reasons, the ideal time to plan your trip would be between the months of December and January. Fortunately, during these months, the weather is at its coolest, without the scorching heat breathing down your neck.
The typical tourist time for Egypt is between May and September, as these are the summer months. By planning an early Christmas in Egypt, you are guaranteed to escape the large crowds and have a more relaxed stay.
When planning a holiday, it is important that you extend your research beyond the dos and don’ts. Luckily for you, here are some guidelines and precautions you should take before visiting Egypt this holiday season.
With that said, letβs jump right into the list.
1. Don’t drink any tap water
Like most countries around the world, it is advised that you do not drink any tap water. Egypt is no different. The water is unsafe to drink as it is highly chlorinated. Not to say that the water has been polluted in any way or form, but you may experience some stomach and even skin problems. You may choose to buy bottled water from stores and hotels, or alternatively, boil the water using a kettle.
2. Money, money and then some
Egypt is home to some of the most amazing attractions and sites. Spoiler: That doesn’t mean that you get to see it for free, though. So, you may need to budget a little extra if you’d like to see the Great Pyramids, Sphinx, and the Tomb of King Tutankhamun.
3. It’s not what you say; it’s what you wear
Although the weather in Egypt is hot and dry in the summer season, you will still need to cover up because it is predominately a Muslim country. So, remember to dress appropriately and conservatory in order to respect cultures and religions, even if they may differ from your own.
4. Keep your friends close and belongings even closer
Yes, you may be on holiday, but that is not an excuse for you to leave everything everywhere. You will need to keep an extra eye on your valuables as you will probably stand out like a sore thumb in Egypt, making you an even bigger target for pickpocketing and robbery. Although there is a strong presence of the military and security around the country, it is better to be safe than sorry.
5. You will probably need a Visa
You will need a visa to enter Egypt. The good news is that you are now able to get your visa online. The great news is, if you are travelling from South Africa, you are eligible to obtain a visa upon arrival.
You can find the online application right here.
6. Hiring of tour companies
If you aren’t brave enough to wander the streets of Cairo, Giza and Alexandria by yourself, then may I suggest hiring a tour guide. Of course, do not just pick any random off the street, if you know what I mean. Do your research and see which one you feel most comfortable with. Check reviews online, check the company’s background, and maybe get in touch with one of their agents.
7. Prepare to deep dive into your pockets
Salaries in Egypt are very low, while the cost of labour is quite high. Tipping is something that is expected a lot in Egypt, almost customary. Be sure to tip bathroom attendants, waiters, tour drivers, porters, and anyone else who may be of any service to you during your stay.
8. Vaccinate before it’s too late
Do not forget your vaccinations! Especially the most recent COVID-19 vaccination, which is considered more important than your passport at this point. You may want to check up on those Hepatitis A and Typhoid vaccinations also. It is important to note that there is no Malaria in Egypt, so tablets, as well as other preventative measures, will not be necessary. Speak to your doctor or medical professional if you are unsure about anything.
9. Don’t forget your sunscreen
The climate in Egypt is incredibly dry and hot as it is surrounded by the desert. Especially in the summer months, when the temperature can skyrocket and leave you as burnt as a roasted chicken. It is important that you wear sunscreen and a hat and try to stay out of the sun as much as possible, even during the winter season. Sun lotion or aloe vera is also recommended after a long day of sightseeing.
10. Girls/Guys just wanna have fun
Egypt is a beautiful place filled with much to see and do for the entire family. From cruising on the Nile to scuba diving in the Red Sea to visiting tombs, take advantage of your time there and see as much as you can. While taking these precautions, of course. You can also do camel tours and rides or go driving through the desert in cars or carts. The possibilities are endless.
Remember to take all of these into account. You can do some extra research of your own. Overall, enjoy the ‘Gift of the Nile’ and all that it presents to you.
One last thing, in the famous words of The Bangles do not forget to “walk like an Egyptian.”
