TikTok officially went offline in the United States late Saturday night, shortly before a nationwide ban took effect.
TikTok shuts down in the US: Here are the latest updates
Visitors to the app were greeted with a pop-up message confirming its unavailability:
“Sorry, TikTok isn’t available right now. A law banning TikTok has been enacted in the US. Unfortunately, that means you can’t use TikTok for now.”
This unprecedented blackout comes after the Supreme Court upheld a bipartisan law that bans TikTok in the US unless its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, sells its stake to an American or allied buyer.
TikTok hinted at a possible return soon, pending intervention from President-elect Donald Trump.
A pop-up message on the app stated:
“We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated that he will work with us on a solution to reinstate TikTok once he takes office. Please stay tuned!”
Trump had previously suggested on Meet the Press that he may grant a 90-day extension for TikTok to comply with the law after his inauguration on Monday, 20 January 2025.
However, as of Sunday, millions of US users remain locked out of the platform.
