The Reddit app now has a TikTok-like short video feed, which according to reports, is only available on iOS for now.
Reddit launches a short video feed
The feature started rolling out on iOS on Friday, 13 August 2021. The video feed reportedly pulls content from subreddits from people you follow, as well as people you might not follow. According to TechCrunch, most iOS users should, by now, have a button on their app directly to the right of the search bar that will show a stream of videos in a TikTok-like configuration when tapped.
When the video pops up, users can upvote or downvote, comment, gift an award or share it. Users can also swipe up to see another video, feeding content from subreddits the user is subscribed to — as well as related content.
“Reddit’s mission is to bring community and belonging to everyone in the world, and subsequently, Reddit’s video team’s mission is to bring community through video,” a Reddit spokesperson said in a statement.
Reddit’s experiment with videos
The discussion forum platform has been experimenting with the feature since last year. People could change the video interface into what appeared more like TikTok. And before this, you could only watch videos on Reddit by scrolling through the feed.
“Over the course of the last year, our goal was to build a unified video player, and re-envision the player interface to match what users (new and old) expect when it comes to an in-app video player — especially commenting, viewing, engaging and discovering new content and communities through video,” Reddit added.
There is no clear timeline as to when the feature will roll out to everyone, including Android users. However, it started rolling out to iOS users in late July. iOS users simply need to update their Reddit app to start watching videos.
