OpenAI confirmed the issue at 14:52 SAST (04:52 PST), stating that it was investigating elevated error rates.
The outage affected ChatGPT and its API, though other OpenAI services, including Playground, Labs, and Sora, remained fully operational.
According to OpenAI’s incident timeline, the outage began at 13:33 SAST (03:33 PST), with error rates gradually increasing. By 14:26 SAST (04:26 PST), the issue was identified, and a fix was implemented shortly after.

This marks the sixth time ChatGPT has experienced service disruptions since December 2024, including a similar incident on Tuesday that lasted less than an hour.
While OpenAI has not elaborated on the causes of these outages, the frequency has raised concerns among users reliant on ChatGPT for critical tasks.
The partial outage comes just two days after OpenAI announced the ambitious Stargate Project, a $500 billion initiative aimed at advancing artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure in the United States.
The project, funded by a coalition led by SoftBank, Oracle, and OpenAI, seeks to reindustrialise America’s AI capabilities while creating hundreds of thousands of jobs and bolstering national security.
