Capitec users were rocked out of sleep when, in the wee hours of ‘Pay Day’ Tuesday, the banking app reflected zero balances.
Capitec pay-day nightmare: Users report zero balances
Frustrated clients took to social media to blast the bank for, once again, failing to provide a safe and secure service. Details on the latest breakdown are still scarce but Capitec users reported not being able to view their bank balances.
Even worse, some users whose salaries were paid to their accounts on Tuesday could not access their funds due to the zero balance error.
While Capitec had not issued a formal statement when this article was published, the bank’s overworked social media team issued this blanket reply to frustrated users:
“We apologise for the inconvenience. The App was experiencing intermittent issues. The matter has been resolved. Kindly restart your device and check your balance again.”
According to Down Detector, users first reported issues with Capitect shortly after midnight on Tuesday, 25 April 2023. As you will see in the chart below, the outage saw a spike at around 05:43, with users reporting issues with mobile and online banking, as well as in-app transfers.
This is the second Capitec outage in 2023. On 24 March 2023, the bank’s users were left in the dark as access to the banking app was bizarrely revoked.
At the time, 84% of users reported problems with mobile banking, while another 15% could not access Capitec’s online features.
In August 2022, disgruntled clients took to social media to vent their frustrations after the bank incorrectly sent ‘insufficient funds’ messages whenever users performed transactions at ATMs via online banking.
Capitec acknowledged the fault and vowed to restore services. It took the bank two days to fix the technical issue.
