According to Down Detector tracking, the majority of issues centered around mobile banking (69%), with online banking (24%) and app-based transfers (6%) also affected.
Customers expressed their frustrations on social media, particularly as the outage occurred on a payday, a critical time for many users.
One user highlighted a recurring issue with Capitec’s app deactivating after seven days of inactivity, requiring reactivation through the mobile app—an impossible task during the outage.
Another user sarcastically suggested that Capitec’s new slogan should reflect its frequent technical problems around payday.
In response to the disruption, Capitec Bank issued a statement acknowledging the technical issues and apologising for the inconvenience caused.
“We are experiencing technical issues, and are working as quickly as possible to resolve it. We apologise for the inconvenience caused,” the bank wrote.
Despite these assurances, customers expressed growing concerns about the reliability of Capitec’s services, particularly given the frequency of such outages.
