Sony has entered a strategic global business partnership with South Korean gaming giant NCSoft, focusing on expanding its reach in the mobile gaming sector.
PlayStation swoops in for mobile gaming dominance with NCSoft deal
As reported by IGN, Sony Interactive Entertainment and NCSoft have announced a significant partnership, marking Sony’s ambitious move to strengthen its position in the mobile gaming market.
This collaboration aims to combine Sony’s gaming expertise with NCSoft’s technological prowess and experience in massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs).
NCSoft, known for popular MMORPGs like Guild Wars and Lineage, brings to the table its extensive experience in online gaming and mobile platforms. CEO Taekjin Kim expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, highlighting the potential for creating new experiences across various genres and regions.
Jim Ryan, the outgoing boss of Sony Interactive Entertainment, emphasised that the partnership aligns with Sony’s strategy to extend the PlayStation brand beyond consoles.
This move is part of Sony’s broader plan to reach a wider audience and explore new gaming frontiers.
In line with its mobile gaming ambitions, Sony established the PlayStation Studios Mobile Division and acquired Savage Game Studios, signalling a serious commitment to developing high-quality mobile games.
Despite recent rebranding and team changes at Savage Game Studios, now known as Neon Koi, Sony remains focused on its mobile gaming strategy.
Sony’s move comes amidst increasing competition in the mobile gaming market, notably Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard, which includes King, the developer behind the hit mobile game ‘Candy Crush Saga’. This acquisition is part of Microsoft’s broader strategy to challenge major players like Apple and Google in the digital distribution and app store space.
