Zozibini Tunzi joins her country mates on The Woman King
Tunzi sent social media into a raucous when she made the announcement on Wednesday. The former universal pageant queen will star alongside fellow countrywoman Thuso Mbedu, as well as Masali Baduza, Seputla Sebogodi, Thando Dlomo and Makgotso Monyemorathoe.
The en masse recruitment of homegrown talent for the Gina Prince-Bythewood-directed movie can be attributed to the fact that most of the filming will take place in South Africa.
“I am so honoured and excited to announce that I have been cast for the film, The Woman King. It is a completely new world and first time experience for me so I enter it with the utmost respect and humility. Forever grateful and looking forward,” Tunzi wrote.
What is The Woman King about?
Written by Dana Stevens (Kevin Hart’s Fatherhood), The Woman King is a historic epic film that follows Nanisca (Viola Davis) and Nawi (Thuso Mbedu) on their journey to free slaves as leaders of an all-female military unit from the Kingdom of Dahomey.
Fans should expect an emotionally jarring depiction of life as a woman in the kingdom that thrived in West Africa between 1600 and 1904, as one of the only monarchies in the world to have an all-female military force, the Dahomey Amazons.
The Woman King will be distributed globally by Sony Pictures and is expected to premiere in theatres on 16 September 2022.
