Gugu Zulu has a bright future ahead of her after she finished second place at The Voice of Germany.
SA’s Gugu Zulu wows at The Voice of Germany
Zulu, not to be mistaken with the legendary rally driver who passed away in 2016, left crowds and judges in awe when she stepped up against the competition’s winner Sebastian Krenz in the finale.
While the title of the popular German singing contest’s 11th season did not fall on the songstress from Mandeni in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), she did open up a well of opportunities with her weekly vocal displays.
Krenz was crowned the winner of The Voice of Germany, Zulu came in second and Paula Dalla Corte finished third.
Here is a clip of Zulu performing her brand new single When It Goes Down at The Voice of Germany finale:
Everything we know about Zulu
Zulu may be on course to stardom in Europe, but in South Africa, she is relatively unknown. Here is everything we know about the songstress making waves in Germany:
She graduated in South Africa
Zulu graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN).
She is an actress
Right after graduating, Zulu fielded a number of jobs in local entertainment, while honing her career in acting. Her big break came in 2017 when she starred in the Gersh Kgamedi-directed musical She Is King.
In the movie, Zulu plays Khanyisile Khumalo, a village girl who undergoes the trials and tribulations of chasing stardom in treacherous streets of Johannesburg.
She has also starred in The Lion King‘s theatrical plays.
She was a back-up singer for SA stars
Before branching out into her solo career, Zulu garnered a reputation as a back-up singer and has, in the past, performed at the Metro FM and Gospel Grown Awards.
This was her debut single release
Her first attempt at a solo music career came in 2016 when she released Bambelela, a song that found a great deal of prominence on the radio circuit.
She has competed in SA Idols
Much of Zulu’s start in the music industry has been littered with back-up assignments. She has worked with the legendary Ladysmith Black Mambazo and PJ Powers.
She was part of the group that won season one of Clash of the Choirs and, on SA Idols‘ season 13, she crashed out of the Top 16.
Today, Zulu is based in Hamburg, Germany and works for the critically acclaimed musical Der König Der Löwen.
