Briela Sanz, otherwise known by her real name Gaby Castillo, faces a lengthy prison term for drugs and fraud charges — that’s if she doesn’t start singing like a canary.
Why was Briela Sanz arrested?
As reporte by New York Post, the pink-haired 26-year-old Instagram-influencer-turned-songstress was taken down by a police task force in Mexico City, Mexico, on Monday.
Early investigations into Sanz’ lavish lifestyle suggests she may be part of the Union Tepito gang, a large organised enterprise renowned in Mexico City for microtrafficking, human trafficking and extortion.
When she was taken down, Sanz was travelling in a black SUV which was carrying more than R770 000 (₱1 million) in cash, as well as a considerably large consignment of cocaine and marijuana.
Police also recovered a firearm that, turns out, was purchased with a fake cheque in December 2021. It’s unclear, at this stage, if the firearm was the possession of Sanz or the other occupant of the SUV, a 35-year-old gentleman by the name of Jose Hareff Soto Jimenez.
Sanz faces further sanction for extortion
Authorities involved in the take-down have not revealed much about their work in closing the net on Sanz and her associates. However, one thing is clear, the life she purported on Instagram was nowhere close to scratching the surface of her reality.
This is especially true since, according to reports, Sanz is also the subject of an intensive extortion investigation.
Authorities have yet to add more details to the story but it’s widely believed that the 26-year-old was the centrepiece of an extortion campaign led by the Tepito gang, where she would allegedly take compromising pictures of her ‘clients’ (we know what that’s about) and use these to blackmail them for a ransom.
Sanz has yet to post bail in her drugs and fraud case and, at the time of publishing, she was still in police custody.
