What will the president announce?

Everything is up in the air ahead of Ramaphosa’s ‘family meeting’. South Africa, as the daily Covid-19 statistics suggest, has not behaved well at Alert Level 1.

Large gatherings and other superspreader events have been a common sight since the start of the festive season. The Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) are four provinces experiencing the bulk of the second wave.

While the rumour mill has run rampant with claims of a second lockdown facing the Western Cape, there have been no early indications that this is what Ramaphosa is going to announce on Monday evening.

DIRCO Minister Naledi Pandor, speaking at a recent media briefing on international travel, did, however, hint at strict lockdown regulations returning this week.

Of course, the president’s highest priority would be to deal with superspreader events and social gatherings. If this is indeed done away with, don’t be surprised if Ramaphosa also clamps down on alcohol sales.

Moreover, the current nationwide curfew is 00:00. We expect the president to reduce this to an earlier period, further throttling non-essential movement.

KZN has yet to issue a directive on access to its beaches. If it’s not announced this evening, the topic may come to the fore in the week when provincial governments relay more details on new restrictions.
