Tshwane Bus Services has issued a warning about potential disruptions to several bus routes on Monday, 13 May 2024, due to ongoing protests in the area.
Tshwane bus service routes that will be affected by protests
The Tshwane Bus Services has identified specific routes that are likely to be impacted by the scheduled protests in the Gomorrah area.
The routes expected to face disruptions include Tuine 1 and Tuine 2, possibly affecting the Booysens routes during the morning shifts.
Commuters relying on these services are advised to plan accordingly and expect delays.
The Hercules Community Police Forum has been actively communicating these potential disruptions to help prepare residents and commuters for the expected changes in bus service availability.
Is SAMWU behind the protest?
While the exact organisers of Monday’s protests remain unidentified, there is speculation about the involvement of the South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU).
This speculation arises particularly because the protests follow a week after a SAMWU-backed strike that significantly disrupted bus services.
Last week, SAMWU members unexpectedly walked off their jobs, demanding to meet with the City Manager and disrupting the afternoon bus service.
Although the Independent Municipal and Allied Trade Union (IMATU) members did not participate in the strike and covered the afternoon shifts, the city had to intervene with labour processes to address the sudden stoppage.
Given this backdrop, the role of SAMWU in the upcoming protests remains a point of concern and speculation among city officials and commuters.
