An initial squad of 39 members across seven sports codes has been named to represent Team SA at the 2024 Paris Olympics in July.

Team SA athletes to look out for at 2024 Paris Olympics

This list, announced by the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) in Johannesburg, includes standout athletes such as Tatjana Smith, Chad Le Clos, and Akani Simbine.

Smith, a double medalist from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, will compete in the women’s 100m and 200m breaststroke events.

Le Clos, attending his fourth Olympics, is part of an exclusive club of South African Olympians and holds the record for the most Olympic medals won by a South African.

Simbine, a prominent sprinter, is expected to perform strongly in the 100m event.

Other notable athletes include Wayde van Niekerk, the men’s 400m gold medalist from Rio 2016, and marathon runner Gerda Steyn, who has set a new South African record.

The women’s athletics team also includes Cian Oldknow and Irvette van Zyl, both seasoned Olympians.

SASCOC has announced significant financial incentives for athletes who win medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Gold medalists will receive R400,000, with their coaches getting R100,000.

Silver medalists will earn R200,000 and R50,000 for their coaches, while bronze medal winners will take home R75,000, with their coaches receiving R25,000.

The incentives, SASCOC shared, are a gesture to motivate the athletes to achieve their best and bring home medals.

SuperSport will provide coverage of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, ensuring that viewers across South Africa can watch all the action live.

From 26 July to 11 August, SuperSport will broadcast all gold medal events, giving sports enthusiasts access to every significant moment.
